The Panzer IV was the most numerous German-built tank of the Second World War. The first models were built in limited numbers to support Panzer IIIs, but it was soon found that the larger Panzer IV had greater upgrade potential. Upgunned and uparmoured, it was the backbone of German Panzer forces by the middle of the war.
