中文的“法國”是“法兰西国”之简称，“法兰西”最早源於拉丁文中的“Francia”，意指“法蘭克人之國” [10] ，现今意大利语和西班牙语中仍称法国为Francia，而法国国名的英语France、德语Frankreich和荷兰语Frankrijk也拥有与Francia相同的词根。
