Town History - Rutherfordton, NC
Rutherfordton was the location of the first U.S. Post Office in western North Carolina. It was established on October 10, 1798. The Rutherfordton Academy, which opened in 1806, was the first school chartered by the General Assembly for the western portion of the state.
