In signal processing, phase noise is the frequency-domain representation of random fluctuations in the phase of a waveform, corresponding to time-domain deviations from perfect periodicity (jitter).
Phase noise is the term used to describe short term variations in phase or frequency stabil-ity, with "short term" referring to time intervals on the order of seconds or less. Another way of defining or describing phase noise is as random or unintentional phase modula-tion.
