Fish and Fishes. Fish are aquatic vertebrate animals that have gills but lack limbs with digits, like fingers or toes. Recall that vertebrates are animals with internal backbones. Most fish are streamlined in their general body form.
When studying anatomy for the first time, many students are confronted with numerous unfamiliar terms that must be mastered, because effective communication requires their use. Some understanding of the derivation of anatomical terms from their classical origins will help to fix their meanings and spelling in mind.
