A single AVRE was destroyed in the first incident on 5 February 1991 and two were destroyed in the second incident on 6 February 1991.

Not really that unexpected. The AVREs were designed to assault enemy fortifications such as bunkers (leading to confusion as to if they were "assault vehicle, royal engineers" or "armoured vehicle, royal engineers" early on), and we already have equivalents in the assault gun or assault tank role with the M4 105, the SU-122 and -152, the Sturmpanzer and the Brummbar, and so on.
