Copper alloy birdlip brooch (a La Tène III type). The body of the brooch including head, bow and catchplate has been cast in one piece. Framed catchplate with dog-leg bar, moulded decoration on bow including lines running parallel to bow and transverse mouldings near head including the small lip-like projection which defines the type.

At the top of the bow a single ribbed gold wire rises up from this groove curling over the flower-like ornament that forms the beaked part of this Birdlip brooch. A cluster of four small round pellets of gold are nested on either side within the scoop of the petals, reminiscent of berries on a plant.

An incomplete Late Iron Age to early Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Birdlip variant type, dating to c. 30 BC - AD 60. The brooch is almost complete, most of the pin is missing. The head has elaborate moulded decoration, probably of stylised zoomorphic form.

An Iron Age bronze Birdlip type brooch featuring a long narrow body and a small trumpet head, both crossed by a central rib. An arched return extends above the head, whilst a curled tongue, characteristic of Birdlip brooches, projects forwards behind it. The pin is attached by a spring at the head of the bow and sits in the pin catch, now fixed.

2018年9月7日 · Birdlip. These brooches can have a variety of pin fixings, either sprung or hinged. Sprung examples have the spring cast in one with the rest of the brooch, and have an internal chord. Hinged examples are generally later. The main diagnostic feature is the turned-up ‘beak’ below a bold transverse moulding on the bow.
